Presented by Amy Matthews, Dementia Coach

Communication is an essential part of how we connect, act, and interact with those around us. When communication is impaired, we can feel a disconnect with the person. Communication is affected  relatively early in Alzheimer’s disease, making it difficult for the individual to effectively communicate their needs, as well as making it difficult for caregivers to feel connected and effective at meeting the person’s needs. This program will help participants understand how Alzheimer’s disease affects and changes one’s ability to communicate verbally. We will also discuss ways to interpret behavior as communication and techniques for communicating effectively with the person who has dementia.

Presented by Heather McKay, PhD, OT/L; Dr. Heather McKay is an occupational therapist, dementia care specialist and international trainer/speaker on topics related to dementia care and caregiver education

Family caregivers are supporting people living with dementia for a decade or longer. Recognizing changes throughout this long disease can feel like detective work. Dr. Heather McKay, will present a webinar focused on the five stages of dementia progression and strategies that work to support people in every stage.

Participants will learn how to adapt their help to match the person’s changing needs and foster more positive interactions throughout disease progression. Dealing with dementia is challenging, but when families and their myriad helpers understand the timeline and cooperate to redesign plans as the person’s needs change, they can provide the right support at the right time—improving life for the person living with dementia and each other.

A Song From the Past

My aunt had played piano beautifully, but for the past decade she wouldn’t touch the keys. Dementia limited her attention span, so getting her interested in anything has been challenging for herand for us. But Wayne, one of her Artis Life Enrichment Assistants, never gave up. Since she would never come over to the piano, Wayne decided to bring the piano to her! He rolled it over, started tapping the keys and spoke to her about her years of playing. Within minutes, she slowly began to play beautiful musicfrom memory! Everyone was astonished. Now she eagerly plays with another resident for audiences at Artis. Our family is overjoyed!
